I was saddened to hear the news that Gordy Prochnow had passed. A loss to the fire service, the scouting community, Freehold Township, and especially his family. I first met Gordy in 1980 as a member of the Adelphia Fire Company (Howell Township Fire Company #1) when two twin Mack CF 1250 GPM pumpers were being designed and ordered. Gordy worked for Mack at the time and was a great example of customer service. The two pumpers purchased were among the last to be built entirely by Mack Trucks in Allentown, PA. Gordy knew everything about the trucks from bumper to bumper and was always interested to see how they were doing. As Gordy would say nothing beats a Mack and I think it’s true because one of the two is still in-service protecting Adelphia. If you look back at Central Jersey fire apparatus during the 70s and 80s Gordy, and his colleagues (Tim Smith and Bill Russell) were responsible for placing many a Mack fire truck in communities throughout the region. Later I had the pleasure of working with Gordy at the Monmouth County Fire Academy, both as student and as an instructor. Gordy coordinated classes, called students and scheduled them for training, dealt with any issues that came up, fixed things that were broken, contacted fire departments to send apparatus to support classes, and most important was an overall mentor to all. I had the privilege of working with him as our fire district bordered Freehold Township. He was a professional through and through and worked to ensure that the residents of all of our communities had the best fire protection possible regardless of what the fire truck said on its door. Because of this Adelphia, Freehold Boro, East Freehold and Freehold Township Independent had a number of areas were we responded together automatically. Gordy was pleased that many members of his family followed his footsteps and served in the volunteer fire service protecting their communities. I had the pleasure of working with many of them and can tell you they were made from the same high caliber standards as Gordy and believed in service above self. There are three things you learned from spending time with Gordy. 1) He loved his family more than anything. 2) He was passionate about the fire service. 3) He valued scouting because of the impact it had on the lives on young men. Sadly many people go through life not knowing what they want to do as a career or not knowing what they want to do when they grow up. Not Gordy, he was always happy and upbeat, enjoyed being around people, always had a story to share, always wanted to ask how your family was doing, and always had his pulse on what was taking place. Gordy’s passing is unfortunately the end of an era. In this era, there are not too many folks around like Gordy and he will be missed. Eriks and Kelly Gabliks

Strength and peace to the Prochnow family. Gain strength in knowing that he made the world a better place. Scouting in Troop 155, especially the Klondike Derby, provided some of my most positive memories growing up. Rest In Peace

I only knew Gordy for a short time but he still made an impact on me. I'm an EMT at the medical transport company that brought him to and from his appointments and he was the best. I playfully "adopted" him as my grandfather cause I truly cared about him as if he were my own family. he definitely will be missed by me and the rest of my co-workers, that's for sure. until we meet again porkchop. love you Gordy.

My wife, Jane, and I were good friends of the Prochnows for over 25 years raising our kids together as members of St Peters. They were extremely active in church, the fire company, and just about everything else you could imagine. It's hard to imagine that Gordon has died. He was such an institution in Freehold Township. God rest his soul and assist his family in their grief. I'm in Florida for the winter or else I would be there for the visitation and funeral.
