Obituary of George William Palmer
George William Palmer, Sr., 93, of Freehold passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, July 11, 2010. He was born in Tennent on January 24, 1917, the eldest son of the late Samuel B. Palmer Sr. and Maude Palmer Driver. George was a pillar in the Freehold community who was a friend to everyone and always willing to help anyone in any way he could.
George was a member of the Bethel A.M.E. Church, Freehold for over 35 years and sang with the Men’s Chorus.
He was a member of the Greater Freehold Chapter of the NAACP for over a decade and was currently serving as the Second Vice President.
George was a lifelong resident of the area. He was married to the former Helen J. Baker in 1956 and to this union was born two sons. He, his wife, and elder son became residents of Freehold in 1960. George was a former Gulf Station owner and an auto mechanic who retired in 1985.
George was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Samuel B. Palmer, Jr. in 1988 and Theodore Driver and his sister Evelyn Driver. He leaves to mourn his loss his devoted wife of 54 years Helen Baker Palmer; two sons, George Jr., Freehold and James, Mesa, Arizona; one brother, Samuel Palmer, Jr., Chesapeake, Virginia; one niece, Dawn Palmer, Hamilton; one great niece Lisa Linder; and one great grand niece, D’Laine Fisher, Eatontown. George is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as numerous friends and extended family.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 16, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the Bethel A.M.E. Church, 3 Waterworks Road, Freehold. Interment will follow at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold.
