Obituary of Doris May Bellis Sleeper
Doris May Bellis Sleeper, 92, of Freehold Township died Monday, August 23, 2010 at Applewood Estates Healthcare Center, Freehold Township. Mrs. Sleeper was born in Newark and had resided in Bloomfield from 1929 to 1950, Cedar Grove from 1950 to 1955, Verona from 1955 to 1975, Toms River from 1975 to 1980, and in West Long Branch from 1980 to 1985 before moving to Freehold Township.
Mrs. Sleeper was a legal secretary before her retirement. During World War II she was a “Rosie the Riveter” working on battleship gun controls.
She was a graduate of Montclair College High School.
Mrs. Sleeper was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Freehold where she was a member of the church hand bell choir; a former member of the First Presbyterian Church of Verona; a member of the Jersey Shore Rose Society; and was an avid bridge player.
Her husband, Henry W. Sleeper, died in 1999.
Surviving are two sons, Paul Henry Sleeper and Alan Wesley Sleeper and his wife Lori; a daughter, Ann Elizabeth Sleeper-Zicus; and five grandchildren, Jenna, Leandra, Dylan, Garrett and Morgan.
Visiting hours will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 118 West Main Street, Freehold, NJ 07728 would be appreciated.
