Obituary of Samuel F. Curcio
Samuel F. Curcio, Jr., 81, of Whiting passed away on September 3, 2010 at Community Memorial Hospital, Toms River. Born in Springfield, he moved to Freehold in 1948 with his parents, Sam and Teresa Curcio.
Sam proudly served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1989. After 13 weeks of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas he received orders to Kaufbuern, Germany for training in aircraft weight and balance.
He was sent to Rhein Mein Air Force Base, Germany to support the Berlin airlift flying supplies from Frankfurt to Berlin. He returned to the United State in 1950 and was assigned to Westover Air Force Base, Massachusetts. While at Westover he supported Blue Jay Project flying supplies to Thule Air Force Base in Greenland.
In the late 1950’s he transferred to Travis Air Force Base, California. He was in the rescue mission of General Travis from a burning B-29 aircraft. After his tour at Travis, Chief Curcio was stationed at Kunsan Air Base, Korea. In 1953 Chief Curcio joined an Air Force Reserve Troop Carrier Squadron.
In 1964 he joined the 514th Military Airlift Wing at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey as a loadmaster on a C-119.
In 1969 Chief Curcio was assigned to Aerial Delivery Section of the 514 as assistant supervisor.
In 1973 he resumed duties as an Air Transportation Manager he had six aerial post Squadrons of the 514th Military Airlift Wing.
He was awarded Master Aircrew Member Wings and received the Meritorious Service Medal, Berlin Airlift Device, Humane Action Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
After 40 years of service he retired on May 15, 1989.
Chief Curcio is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Bradham Curcio; three sons, Samuel, Curcio, III and John Curcio and his wife, Kay, all of Gainesville, Florida, and Michael Curcio and his wife, Debbie, Neptune Township; two daughters, Theresa Marvinny, McDonough, Georgia, and Mary Alice Curcio, Tinton Falls; five grandchildren, Jessica, Crystal and John Curcio, all of Neptune Township and Meghan and Mandy Marvinny, Georgia; two great grandchildren, Anthony and Shane Curcio, Of Neptune Township; two sisters, Marie Moen, Wall Township and Bobbie O’Connor, Neptune Township; a brother, John Curcio, Freehold; a godchild, Mary Jo Kley, Brick Township; and many loving brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held at the Higgins Memorial Home, 20 Center Street, Freehold on Tuesday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Rose of Lima Church, Freehold on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. followed by entombment at Maplewood Chapel Mausoleum, Freehold. Memorial donations St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1905 would be appreciated.
