Obituary of L. Glenn Barkalow

Dr. L. Glenn Barkalow, 85 of Freehold ended a long and fulfilling life accompanied by his family in the comfort of his home on March 9, 2011. He was born on a farm in Adelphia, the last of 6 children of Leon and Eleanor Barkalow. He moved to Freehold where he attended Freehold High School. The call to war caused him to leave high school a semester early. He intended to enlist in the Air Corp to become a pilot and wanted to train to become a doctor. He was informed they needed more doctors than pilots. With those instructions he attended Dickinson College and graduated from Princeton University in the Navy’s V12 program. He went to medical school at Long Island College of Medicine. During medical school he met and married the love of his life, Winifred McAuliff. He went on to postgraduate training at Roosevelt Hospital in New York City. His military commitment was fulfilled with a two-year service at Burtonwood Air Force Base near Warrington England. He returned to Freehold to set up a medical practice. Dr. Barkalow practiced as an internist for the next 41 years. He was an attending physician at Jersey Shore Medical Center. As one of the founding physicians he was an early force in bringing a hospital to the Freehold area. For him, the opening of this hospital and the ensuing years was one of the proudest periods of his career. Once Freehold Area Hospital opened, now known as CentraState Medical Center, he served as Chairman of the Department of Internal Medicine for 18 years. He also served as Chief of Staff. During this time he was also President of the Medical Society of Monmouth County and President of the Central Jersey Heart Association. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was a member of Monmouth County Medical Society, New Jersey State Medical Society, American Medical Association, New Jersey Academy of Medicine, Member American College of Physicians and Fellow American College of Chest Physicians. As a life-long learner, later in his career he passed the Medical Boards in Geriatric Medicine. While still an attending physician at Freehold Area Hospital he served as Medical Director to Applewood Estates. Dr. Barkalow retired from medicine in 1996. He is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Winifred M. Barkalow; five children, Derek Barkalow of DeLeon Springs Florida, Glenda Grimes of Rosemont New Jersey, Susan Lambeth of Ipswich Massachusetts, David Barkalow of Deerfield Illinois and Kurt Barkalow of Wakefield Massachusetts; ten grandchildren, Kyle Barkalow, Bryce Barkalow, Katherine Grimes, James Grimes, Tara Lambeth, Morganna Lambeth, Skyla Lambeth, Jan Barkalow, William Barkalow, Ethan Barkalow; his sister Wilma Prescott of Carlisle Pennsylvania. Funeral services will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 91 West Main St. Freehold on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. followed by interment at Adelphia Cemetery, Adelphia. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to CentraState Healthcare Foundation, 916 Route 33, Suite 6, Freehold, NJ 07728.
