Obituary of Joseph Field George
Joseph Field George, Jr., 86, of Freehold Township died Monday, August 8, 2011 at home. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland and had resided in Freehold Township since October, 1978.
Mr. George was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He completed business courses at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.
In Maryland at the age of 21 he founded and was president of the local Democratic club and at age 24 was a candidate for State Legislature.
He was named by the Mayor of Baltimore to serve on the Board of the Baltimore City Jail for four terms.
Mr. George retired in 1983 after 37 years at Chevron Asphalt Company.
He was married on June 2, 1951 to his wife, Evelyn Harris George.
Mr. George was president for three terms of the Holy Name Society of St. Rose of Lima Church, Baltimore. He was also the first president of the St. Rose of Lima Home/School Association and served for three terms. He was chairman of the three major church fund raising campaigns, was Chairman of the Church financial committee for nine years, a Lay Corporator for six years, and a lecturer for ten years. He was also a girl’s softball coach.
After moving to New Jersey he became an active communicant of St. Mary’ s Church, Colts Neck where he was coordinator of the Men’s Morning Office since 1981, volunteer coordinator and spiritual center coordinator, president of the Men’s Guild for three years, chairman of the St. Mary’s Picnic and coordinated mini breakfasts. He also tap danced in St. Mary’s Musical Shows.
The greatest achievement was presentation of the Nostrum Ecclesiam Tempus Award by Most Reverend John M. Smith, Bishop of Trenton, in recognition of service to the Lord and the Church in July, 2007.
He was predeceased by two brothers-in-law, William C. Harris, Jr. and Raymond Kyle
In addition to his wife he is survived by his children, Katherine Barnes and her husband Edward, Jeanne Edmunds, and Barbara Wieczynski and her husband Mark Wieczynski; a sister, Dolores Kyle; six grandchildren, Andrea and her husband Jimmy, David, Brett and his wife Michelle, Rachel and her fiancé Kyle, Elissa and her husband Corey, and Kara;; nine great grandchildren, Dallan, Hayden, Reyna, Marissa, Brennen, Brynlee, Brody, Braylon, and Landry; a nephew, R. Donald Kyle and his wife Lynne; sisters-in-law, Mary Eckhart and Audrey Reid; many nieces and nephews; a good friend and caregiver, Tamari “Tami” Phutkaradze; and two step grandchildren, Jennifer and Mark.
The viewing will be held at St. Mary’s Church, 1 Phalanx Road, Colts Neck on Thursday from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at the church on Friday at 9:00 a.m. followed by interment at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Mary’s Social Concerns, 1 Phalanx Road, Colts Neck, NJ 07722. Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold is in charge of arrangements.
